Transition vs Athletica (2026): Which AI Triathlon Coach Fits You?

Both build adaptive triathlon plans from sprint to Ironman at a similar monthly price. The real differences are what the AI coach is allowed to change, device and indoor-trainer support, nutrition, and the annual price.

Short answer: Athletica and Transition both build adaptive triathlon plans from sprint to Ironman for about the same monthly price. Choose Athletica if you want a science-first platform that explains the reasoning behind each session and trains around HRV readiness. Choose Transition if you want an AI coach that changes your plan when you ask, plus daily nutrition targets, in-app smart-trainer control, a native Apple Watch app and video technique analysis in one place.

Disclosure: I build Transition. Every Athletica detail below was checked against Athletica's own website, pricing page, terms and App Store listing on October 22, 2026. If something has changed, email [email protected] and I'll correct it.

The biggest difference: what the AI coach is allowed to change

Athletica is explicit about this. Its FAQ says the AI Coach "does not automatically modify your training, settings, or completed workouts" and that its role is "to explain, analyze, and suggest." The plan itself adjusts on Athletica's schedule (a daily or as-needed setting), and you make manual changes with its Workout Wizard.

Transition's coach works the other way. Tell it you are traveling Thursday to Sunday, or that your knee is sore, and it moves, swaps, adds or removes workouts in the same conversation. When you miss key sessions, the app proposes an adjusted plan that you accept with one tap.

Neither approach is wrong. Some athletes want an advisor that never touches the plan. Others want to describe the problem once and have the week fixed.

Same message, two outcomes. You tell the coach: I'm traveling Thursday to Sunday. Athletica: the AI Coach explains and suggests; you make the changes yourself, for example with the Workout Wizard. Transition: the coach rewrites Thursday to Sunday in the same conversation.

Devices and indoor training

Athletica sends bike and run workouts to Garmin and Wahoo, connects to COROS, and reaches Zwift through Intervals.icu or downloadable workout files (.zwo, .erg, .mrc). Apple Watch works through the third-party Watchletic app, and Oura and WHOOP data arrive through Intervals.icu.

Transition sends structured workouts to Garmin, Wahoo, COROS, Suunto, Zwift and ROUVY, and runs them on Apple Watch through its own watch app. Indoors, it controls Bluetooth smart trainers in ERG mode directly from the phone, including a ramp test that sets your FTP. HRV, resting heart rate and sleep come in directly from Garmin, Apple Health, COROS, Suunto, Oura and WHOOP.

Science and transparency

This is where Athletica is strongest. It was co-founded by sports scientist Paul Laursen, PhD. Plan changes show as up or down arrows with a percentage, readiness is built on HRV, resting heart rate and well-being, and Athletica U explains why you are training the way you are. If understanding the method matters as much as following it, that is a real advantage.

Transition is built on the same coaching fundamentals (progression, specificity, recovery and intensity distribution), and the coach will explain any session if you ask. It does not have a structured education course like Athletica U. Read more in Transition's coaching philosophy.

Strength, nutrition and technique

Both apps include strength training: Athletica as a library of 200+ sessions, Transition as sessions generated inside your plan. Transition also gives daily calorie and macro targets with fueling guidance before, during and after workouts, and analyzes video of your swim stroke, bike position and run form. We found no native nutrition or video analysis feature in Athletica.

Price

Athletica has one plan with full access: $19.90 a month, $99 for six months, or $189 a year, with a 14-day free trial and no credit card. Transition is $19 a month or $139 a year in the US, with a 30-day free trial. On annual plans, Transition costs $50 less per year.

Choose Athletica if

  • You want to see the reasoning behind each session and learn the training science as you go.
  • You train around HRV readiness and already use Intervals.icu.
  • You also train for rowing, HYROX or cross-country skiing.
  • Your coach already uses Athletica (coach accounts are free).

Choose Transition if

  • You want the coach to change your plan when life changes, not only advise.
  • You use Apple Watch, Suunto or ROUVY, or want your smart trainer controlled from the app.
  • You want strength, nutrition targets and technique feedback in the same app as your plan.
  • You prefer the lower annual price and a 30-day trial.

Switching from Athletica

Connect your watch or device platform during setup so Transition can see your recent training, then enter your race, goal time, weekly hours and preferred training days. Your first plan is generated during setup. You can keep Athletica running during Transition's trial and compare the two weeks side by side before you decide.

FAQ

Is Athletica good for triathlon?

Yes. Athletica builds adaptive plans for sprint, Olympic, 70.3 and Ironman distances, adjusts them as you train, and has a strong scientific foundation. Its main limits for triathletes are indoor and device support (no in-app trainer control, Apple Watch only through Watchletic) and the lack of native nutrition guidance.

Does Athletica's AI coach change your training plan?

No. By Athletica's own FAQ, the AI Coach explains, analyzes and suggests, and does not modify your training. The plan adapts through Athletica's own update setting, and you make other changes yourself.

Which is cheaper, Athletica or Transition?

Monthly prices are nearly the same ($19.90 vs $19). Annually, Transition is $139 and Athletica is $189. Athletica also offers a six-month plan for $99.

Do Athletica and Transition work with Apple Watch?

Transition has its own Apple Watch app. Athletica works with Apple Watch through the third-party Watchletic app.

Transition's mission is to build a world-class triathlon coach, and I'll keep improving it until it is. I'm constantly evaluating newer models, techniques and architectures, and I build the app to be fast, responsive and simple to use, so managing your training takes as little of your time and effort as possible. — Alex Wormuth, founder
