Can You Use Runna for Triathlon? Runna vs Transition (2026)

Runna offers a triathlon running plan for sprint to Ironman, but it does not plan your swim or bike training. Here is what that means and when a triathlon-first app makes more sense.

Short answer: Partly. Runna has a "triathlon running plan" for sprint, Olympic, half and full Ironman races, and it is an excellent running app. But it plans only the run. Runna's help center says you can't build cycling or swimming into the plan, and swim and bike sessions you log don't influence its recommendations. If you want swim, bike, run and strength planned together, use a triathlon app such as Transition, or pair Runna with a separate swim and bike plan.

Disclosure: I build Transition. Every Runna detail below was checked against Runna's own website, pricing page, help center and App Store listing on October 22, 2026. If something has changed, email [email protected] and I'll correct it.

Runna plans the run only. Transition: swim, bike, run and strength all planned. Runna: swim and bike not planned, run planned, strength optional and outside the plan.

What Runna's triathlon plan does

Runna's triathlon plan handles the running leg: "We'll handle the running," as its page puts it. You choose a sprint, Olympic, half Ironman or Ironman race, and Runna builds run sessions meant to fit alongside your swim and bike training.

What it does not do, according to Runna's help center:

  • Schedule swim or bike sessions in your plan.
  • Count swim or bike sessions toward your plan or use them to adapt it. You can log them by hand, but they "don't influence Runna's recommendations."
  • Sync swim or bike activities from your watch back into Runna. Only runs sync.

So a hard bike day does not change what Runna asks you to run the next morning, and there are no planned brick sessions.

Why the swim and bike matter for your running

In triathlon, the three sports share one body and one week. A long ride on Saturday changes how your Sunday run should look, a heavy swim block changes how much run intensity you can absorb, and bricks (a run straight off the bike) are a key session type for race day. A run plan that cannot see your swim and bike load has to guess.

Transition plans swim, bike, run and strength as one periodized plan sized to your weekly hours, so each session accounts for the others. You can still keep your running sessions specific: tell the coach your run goals and it will build around them.

Where Runna is strong

As a running app, Runna is excellent: polished plans from 5K to ultra, a native Apple Watch app, workouts sent two weeks ahead to Garmin, COROS, Suunto and Apple Watch, AI briefings before runs and insights after them, and race-time estimates that set your paces. Strength sessions are available too, though they sit outside the adaptive running plan.

If you are a runner first, already have a swim squad and a bike coach, and mainly want your run training handled, Runna's triathlon running plan can work.

Choose Runna if

  • You only want the run leg planned and have swim and bike covered.
  • You are training mostly for running races, with an occasional triathlon.
  • You want a running-specific app with a strong Apple Watch experience.

Choose Transition if

  • You want swim, bike, run and strength planned together, including bricks.
  • You want a hard bike or swim day to change what comes next.
  • You want structured swim and bike workouts sent to your watch, Zwift or ROUVY, or run on your smart trainer.
  • You want an AI coach that changes the plan when you ask.
