Short answer: TrainingPeaks and Transition solve different problems. TrainingPeaks is where you follow a plan you bought, work with a human coach, or build your own, with deep analytics and the widest device support. Transition is an AI coach that writes your plan and changes it when your life does. If you have a coach, TrainingPeaks is usually the right home. If you are self-coached and want the planning done for you, Transition is the alternative.
Disclosure: I build Transition. Every TrainingPeaks detail below was checked against TrainingPeaks' own website, pricing page, help articles and App Store listing on October 22, 2026. If something has changed, email [email protected] and I'll correct it.

Two different jobs
TrainingPeaks is a training log, calendar and analytics platform first. It is where most endurance coaches manage their athletes, and its performance management chart (fitness, fatigue and form) is a standard way to read training load. What it does not do is write your plan for you. Plans come from a coach, from the plan marketplace (bought separately; plans are not included with Premium), or from your own planning.
Transition does the planning. Its AI coach builds a periodized plan (base, build, peak, taper) from your race, goal time, weekly hours and preferred days, and keeps it current.

What happens when life gets in the way
On TrainingPeaks, a missed week or a work trip means moving and editing workouts yourself, or asking your coach. TrainingPeaks' coached plans include a set number of plan adjustments per month on the lower tiers.
On Transition, the app notices missed key sessions and proposes an adjusted plan you accept with one tap. Or you tell the coach what changed ("I'm sick for three days", "move my long ride to Sunday") and it rewrites the affected workouts in the same conversation.
Devices and analysis
TrainingPeaks integrates with more than 100 watches, bike computers and apps, pushes planned workouts automatically to Garmin, and controls smart trainers through its TrainingPeaks Virtual app. Garmin acquired TrainingPeaks in July 2026; TrainingPeaks continues to list COROS, Suunto, Wahoo, Polar and Apple Watch among its integrations.
Transition sends structured workouts to Garmin, Wahoo, COROS, Suunto, Zwift and ROUVY, runs them on Apple Watch through its own watch app, and controls Bluetooth smart trainers from the phone. Its analysis is built for decisions rather than charts: the coach reads your training, recovery data and race-time predictions and tells you what to change.
Cost
TrainingPeaks Premium is $19.95 a month or $134.99 a year on the web, plus the cost of a plan if you buy one (coaches set those prices). The free Basic account lets you log workouts, sync devices and follow a plan, with limited future planning. TrainingPeaks' own coached plans are $149, $229 or $359 a month.
Transition is $19 a month or $139 a year in the US, with the plan and every feature included and a 30-day free trial.

FAQ
What is the best TrainingPeaks alternative for a self-coached triathlete?
If what you want from TrainingPeaks is a plan that adapts without a coach, look at AI coaching apps such as Transition, TriDot, Athletica, HumanGO and AI Endurance. They generate and adjust the plan for you. See our side-by-side comparison of AI triathlon apps.
Does TrainingPeaks have AI?
TrainingPeaks has an AI workout generator that turns a text description into a structured workout, available to coaches on the web. It does not generate or adapt plans for athletes with AI, and it has no AI coach chat.
