Short answer: TrainerRoad is a cycling-first app with triathlon plans. Its AI picks and adjusts your bike workouts, controls your smart trainer, and detects your FTP, but swim and run sessions are prescribed by effort and drills, done outside the app, and cannot be sent to a Garmin watch. Choose TrainerRoad if the bike is your priority and you train mostly indoors. Choose Transition if you want swim, bike, run and strength planned and adjusted together, with every session sent to your watch.
Disclosure: I build Transition. Every TrainerRoad detail below was checked against TrainerRoad's own website, pricing page, blog and support articles on October 22, 2026. If something has changed, email [email protected] and I'll correct it.

Where TrainerRoad is excellent
On the bike, TrainerRoad is one of the most developed training apps there is. TrainerRoad AI (relaunched in January 2026) runs simulations to pick the right workout, recalculates your plan after every ride, skip or change, and uses your power, heart rate and post-workout survey to judge whether a session landed. AI FTP Detection estimates your FTP from all your rides with power, and its indoor app, workout library and ERG control are mature.
If you are a cyclist, or a triathlete whose main goal is a faster bike split and who trains indoors most of the week, TrainerRoad is a strong choice.
Where it is thinner for triathlon
TrainerRoad's triathlon plans include swim and run sessions, but its support articles describe them as RPE-based sessions with drills that you complete outside the TrainerRoad app (it suggests printing swim sets for the pool). Its Garmin article states that planned swim and run workouts cannot be pushed to Garmin, and its Zwift sync covers indoor cycling only. Runs count toward your training load and fatigue, but TrainerRoad does not describe run or swim performance changing future run or swim workouts.
There is also no strength programming (you can log strength sessions), no nutrition feature, and no HRV or sleep import.

How Transition handles the same week
Transition plans all three sports, plus strength, as one periodized plan sized to your weekly hours. Swim, bike and run sessions are structured workouts that go to your Garmin, Wahoo, COROS, Suunto or Apple Watch, and bike sessions can go to Zwift or ROUVY, or run on your smart trainer from the app. When you miss key sessions, the app proposes an adjusted plan, and the coach will move, swap or remove any workout when you ask.
Price
TrainerRoad is $21.99 a month or $209.99 a year, with no free trial but a 30-day money-back guarantee. Transition is $19 a month or $139 a year in the US, with a 30-day free trial. On annual plans, Transition costs $70.99 less per year.

FAQ
Is TrainerRoad good for triathlon?
TrainerRoad has triathlon plans for sprint, Olympic, half and full distance, and its bike training is excellent. Swim and run sessions are prescribed by effort and drills and done outside the app, and only cycling workouts sync to Garmin and Zwift. Triathletes who want all three sports structured and synced usually pair it with something else or choose a triathlon-first app.
Can TrainerRoad send run and swim workouts to Garmin?
No. TrainerRoad's support article says planned swim and run workouts cannot be pushed to Garmin; only outside cycling workouts sync.
What is TrainerRoad AI?
TrainerRoad's name, since January 2026, for the engine formerly called Adaptive Training. It simulates training outcomes to choose workouts and recalculates the plan after every ride, skipped workout or change.
